Morgan Stanley's E*TRADE Officially Supports Spot Crypto Trading for Retail Investors
Morgan Stanley's E*TRADE has officially launched spot trading for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana. We analyze the key details, including the 50 bps fee structure and future plans to transition to its own Digital Trust.
Morgan Stanley's E*TRADE Enters the Digital Asset Trading Market
On July 16, 2026, E*TRADE, the retail investing platform of Morgan Stanley, officially launched spot cryptocurrency trading services for its retail clients. This move demonstrates that traditional financial institutions are directly addressing the portfolio diversification needs of retail clients and actively integrating digital assets into their mainstream financial infrastructure.
Supported Assets and Service Structure
With this launch, E*TRADE clients can now trade cryptocurrencies within the same platform environment used for stocks and ETFs. The initial supported assets and key service components are as follows:
- Supported Assets: Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Solana (SOL).
- Infrastructure Partnership: The service is provided through an integration with Zero Hash, a digital asset infrastructure company that facilitates custody and trade execution.
- Integrated Wealth Viewing: Clients can view their cryptocurrency holdings alongside their traditional stock and ETF portfolios in a unified interface, without needing to switch apps or platforms.
- Trading Fees: A transaction fee of 50 basis points (0.50%) is applied to buy and sell orders.
Transfer Limitations and Protection Exceptions
Currently, the service is limited to buying, selling, and holding assets within the platform. Transferring cryptocurrencies to external digital wallets, or depositing crypto from external wallets into E*TRADE, is not yet supported. E*TRADE has indicated plans to add these transfer functionalities by the end of 2026.
Additionally, clear disclosures regarding asset protection regulations have been established. Cryptocurrency assets are held in separate accounts managed by the partner company, Zero Hash, and are not subject to the protections of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) or the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC), which apply to traditional bank deposits and brokerage accounts.
Long-term Infrastructure Reorganization Plans
Morgan Stanley plans to transition E*TRADE's digital asset custody and related services to the 'Morgan Stanley Digital Trust, National Association' once the entity, currently undergoing the approval process, becomes fully operational. This is interpreted as a strategic move to move beyond relying on external infrastructure and establish an internalized custody infrastructure that meets the financial holding company's own regulatory compliance and security standards.
